Mexico is known for its vibrant culture, bursting with color, music, and spirited celebrations—but no place captures this essence quite like Oaxaca.
Every July, the city of Oaxaca comes alive for one of the state’s most cherished celebrations: Guelaguetza, also known as Los Lunes del Cerro or Mondays on the Hill. It’s a spectacular gathering of the region’s 16 Indigenous groups, each bringing their own unique dances, music, and costumes to honor Centoetl, the corn goddess. The result? A breathtaking festival of unity, ancestry, and cultural pride.
A Glimpse Into History
Guelaguetza is more than just a party—it’s a tradition with roots that go back to pre-Hispanic times. Originally held to ask the gods for abundant harvests, the celebration was filled with rituals, offerings, and communal dancing. When the Spanish arrived and introduced Catholicism, the festival evolved to include Christian elements, particularly honoring the Virgin of Carmen.
Today, Guelaguetza is a vibrant mix of ancient and modern, sacred and joyful—a living tribute to Oaxaca’s rich heritage and diversity.
What to Expect at Guelaguetza 2025
The 93rd edition of Guelaguetza promises an unforgettable experience, with the main festivities taking place throughout July. The biggest celebrations happen on July 21 and 28, when the famous Lunes del Cerro performances are held at 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at the Guelaguetza Auditorium on Cerro del Fortín in Oaxaca de Juárez.
But the excitement doesn’t stop there. The schedule is packed with cultural events, including:
- Bani Stui Gulal – a beautiful historical reenactment of Oaxacan traditions.
- Donají… La Leyenda – a theatrical performance under the stars on the evening of July 20, telling the powerful story of the Zapotec princess Donají.
Taste the Flavors of Oaxaca
From July 18 to 29, the Feria Internacional del Mezcal and the Feria del Café will take place at the Oaxaca Cultural and Convention Center. These fairs offer visitors the chance to sample some of the best mezcals and coffees in the region, meet local producers, and discover the flavors that make Oaxaca so unique.
