Mexican Day Toronto
What Happened in History?
The movement for independence began on the night of September 15, 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest in the town of Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato, rang the church bell and delivered a powerful call to arms known as “El Grito de Dolores” (“The Cry of Dolores”).
On the night of September 15, the President of Mexico re-enacts El Grito from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City, shouting: “¡Viva México! ¡Vivan los héroes que nos dieron patria!”
This is followed by the ringing of the same historic bell Hidalgo used, fireworks, and cheering crowds.
The same tradition is echoed in towns and cities across the country and by Mexican consulates around the world—including Toronto. Consul General of Mexico in Toronto, Ambassador Porfirio Thierry Muñoz Ledo will re-enact El Grito.
See you at City Hall!
In 2025, we are proud to celebrate the 31st edition of the Mexican Day Toronto Festival, returning once again to the iconic Nathan Phillips Square—a cherished tradition in the heart of our city.
And for the first time ever, the celebration will last four incredible days—bringing even more music, dance, food, and joy to the heart of Toronto!
Each year, this vibrant public space welcomes approximately 1.8 million visitors, drawn by a rich calendar of community and multicultural events. Every September, we’re thrilled to showcase the beauty and spirit of Mexico in Toronto.
